Dr. Jane Mullen has spent the past few years looking at how positive leadership can affect workplace safety for young workers in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. The study, for which she received $90,000 in Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council funding, found that there is no neutral position for organizational leaders. Mullen is now turning her attention to the darker side of leadership — how a leader's abusive practices can make you feel miserable or, at worst, lead to serious physical injuries.
Gary Ross is arguably the best football player to ever wear Garnet and Gold. Though relatively unknown at first — it didn’t take long for Ross to establish himself as one of the finest players in the Atlantic University Sport (AUS) league. The two-time University Athlete of the Year has excelled equally in science — three times being named an Academic All- Canadian and earning a spot on the Dean’s List.
Why Mount Allison? I had gone on a road trip with friends to the East Coast and I fell in love with it. I applied to all of the smaller places around, but Mount Allison won me over because on my acceptance letter there was a little handwritten note that mentioned Germany and was specifically for me. I thought if they are going to put that much effort into someone who might be coming to the University, imagine how much they will put into a student who is actually there.
Gillian Gibson is this year’s recipient of the Frances S. Allison Award, the top honour for a graduating female student. In her third year, she went on an exchange to Strasbourg France, where she volunteered with ABC Haute-Pierre helping children in local schools, and Unicef France. She has also been involved with Habitat for Humanity, which took her to New Orleans to help with reconstruction after Hurricane Katrina.

I chose Mount Allison for its small community and reputation for providing a great education. Now that I’m here, I love it for so much more — the friendly environment, the small class sizes that allow me to experience one-on-one relationships with my professors, and sitting outside the Swan Pond in the Spring.

It has been eight years since alternative-pop band In- Flight Safety began making music in Sackville. John Mullane ('00) vocals, guitar; Glen Nicholson ('03) drums; Daniel Ledwell ('02) piano, guitar, keyboard; and Brad Goodsell ('03) bass, were initially drawn together by a similar taste in music — bands such as Radiohead and The Cardigans. They wrote the songs on their debut CD, Vacation Land, in Sackville and recorded them in a house on Pleasant Street.

Retired Lt.-Gen. William "Bill" Carr has led a life worth celebrating. He served an illustrious 39-year military career as part of the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF), and was a top-selling marketing executive with Bombardier/Canadair. He has had a life-long association with the Boy Scouts of Canada, eventually serving as its National Commissioner for five years. And that's just scratching the surface.

Dr. Elizabeth Wells has been awarded a prestigious 3M National Teaching Fellowship. The award is widely regarded as Canada’s top teaching honour and recognizes teaching excellence and educational leadership. Wells embodies the concept of teacher-scholar. Devoted to the study of her discipline, she is equally committed to creating a vibrant learning experience for her students and to sharing her passion with others. She is the fifth Mount Allison professor to receive the 3M Fellowship.

Dr. Bruce Robertson is part of an international research team that has been awarded part of a $2 million grant from the Digging into Data Challenge — organized by research agencies from the UK, US, and Canada. The project will determine patterns and connections in primary texts written in Greek and Latin. A database will detail when these texts are referenced in hundreds of thousands of secondary documents. Robertson’s research will provide greater depth to people’s understanding of western literature.
